Have You Met the Amazing Switch Witch? A Fun Family Tradition!

We are less than a week away from Halloween here in the US.  If your kids are anything like mine, they are counting down the days to all that candy!  My youngest has mapped out his route and is so excited to be in a neighborhood again.

We have moved 4 times in the last 5 years so we've experienced all kinds of trick or treating options from traditional trick or treating door to door, to trunk or treating in one location, to no trick or treating (thanks to COVID) and instead doing a scavenger hunt that I created.

Thanks to all of these experiences, I've had the chance to try out a few different options for healthier candy with my kids.  Everything from not participating in Halloween at all, to making my own candy & treats, to just letting them have whatever they want after trick or treating (not my favorite).

The Switch Witch idea:

What has worked the best for us is the Switch Witch.  There are many ways you can do this, but in our house, it involves:

  1. Going trick or treating and enjoying the social part of the holiday with neighbors and friends - it really is a fun time to hang out with your neighbors!
  2. Once they get home they dump all of their candy on the table and pick out about 3-4 candies they really want without any restrictions from us
  3. As they go through it, we separate the different types of candy and create piles of what would work well for gingerbread house building that we do each December.
  4. The candy we don't want gets put back into the bag, and they trade it to the "Switch Witch" for a new bag full of surprises!
    • The anticipation of what's in the bag really helps make it easy to trade it in since they can't wait to find out what's in there! It even works on my teenager!
    • It changes up every year, depending on what I ended up having time to do, but mostly it's filled with organic, non-toxic candy favorites and some little toy or arts & craft item.
  5. I now have 1 bag of candy for decorating Gingerbread houses that I hide until December and the rest of the candy gets thrown away.

And that's it!  With a little extra planning ahead and prepping your Switch Witch bags, you can do this too!

It's a great win win for all.  The kids still get their candy fix plus something fun, and I get piece of mind knowing they are not eating a ton of chemicals and toxic ingredients.

Believe me, I completely realize I have no control over how much junk they will put in their bodies.  But it is a battle I will continue to fight while they are living under my roof.  I need to know that I have done what I can to teach them about the harmful chemicals in our food, so they are better equipped to handle the realities of the toxic world we live in as they grow into adulthood and make their own decisions about what they put in their bodies.

Have you ever tried some form of the switch witch?  Are you going to try it this year?  Let me know in the comments.  I would love to know what works for you and your family!
